A historical investigation of our experiences of space and time in the digital age.
We begin in the 1970s with Raymond Williams’s concept of ‘flow’ on television and follow its transformation over the next two decades in the writing of Fredric Jameson and David Foster Wallace, the course examines what theories of older forms of media tell us about our perceptual habits today, including scrolling and binge-watching.
This seminar explores the ‘fossil record’ of media: what consciousness in the present shares with apparently obsolete cultural forms.
